What is Sutter Health best known for? ›

Sutter Health affiliates have been nationally recognized for cardiac care, neonatology, transplant care, and neurosurgery.

Sutter Health is a large not-for-profit network providing care for more than 100 Northern California communities. Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), part of the Sutter Bay Medical Foundation, serves over 1 million patients across Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties.

In 1981, the for-profit physician group PAMC created the not-for-profit PAMF to control its operations and assets, and in 1993, PAMF became an affiliate of Sutter Health, a not-for-profit organization with hospitals and medical groups in Northern California.

Berkeley's only full-service hospital, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, is scheduled to close by 2030. Alta Bates serves people from El Cerrito and Albany. PAMF offices are reportedly saying its doctors will not accept new patients who are on original Medicare Part A and B. When pressed for details, one PAMF employee explained this policy is really not new, and has been in effect since January 2021.
