Eagles beat Cowboys 28-23 as Jalen Hurts accounts for 3 TDs

Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and added a rushing TD as the Philadelphia Eagles knocked off the Dallas Cowboys 28-23 on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Cowboys led 17-14 at halftime, but Hurts led the Eagles on scoring drives that ended with touchdown passes to Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown to give Philadelphia a 28-14 lead.
  • Dak Prescott, who finished with 374 yards passing and three touchdown passes, drove Dallas to the Philadelphia 6 with 27 seconds to play and a chance to take the lead, but the Eagles defense held on.
  • Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert was ruled out with a forearm injury he suffered in the third quarter.

Eagles TE Dallas Goedert to miss time after fracturing forearm vs. Cowboys: Reports

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert will miss time after fracturing his forearm in Sunday’s win over the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Goedert is scheduled to have an MRI to confirm the diagnosis Monday, according to reports.
  • NFL Network reports Goedert is expected to have surgery, and the Eagles hope he would only miss around four weeks.
  • The 28-year-old suffered the injury on the end of a 28-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter when safety Markquese Bell grabbed Goedert by the right arm to tackle him.
  • Goedert landed awkwardly on his arm and remained on the ground for a bit before heading for the Eagles’ locker room. He did not return to the game.

Five plays that demonstrate how Cowboys came up short against Eagles

The first question Dak Prescott was asked after the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys, was about a handful of plays that came eerily close to flipping the final outcome.

“It’s a game of inches,” Prescott said. “It’s why you got to love this game. It’s tough. It’s tough to win. We fought our asses off. Obviously, they did (too). Great NFC East matchup. They came out with it tonight. As you just said, an inch or two on one of those three plays and we would be talking about a different outcome.”

The three plays — mentioned in the question — Prescott referred to were a play that was called a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and a successful two-point conversion later in the fourth quarter (both were overturned after replay review), and a near touchdown on the game’s final play.

After the Cowboys’ 28-23 loss, nearly every player and coach mentioned being inches away. The aforementioned three plays weren’t the only ones that made this a classic game of inches. Let’s take a look at the mountain of near misses that kept the Cowboys from celebrating the biggest win of the season.

How the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense held off a Cowboys comeback

Sydney Brown had no idea what the call was. The safety sprinted from the sideline to the middle of the field, into the middle of the madness, stretching his arms outward and swiveling his helmet until his eyes found fellow rookie Eli Ricks.

“What’s going on?” Brown yelled.

“Get! Back!” Ricks shouted, each word its own dagger. “Get! Back!”

“What the f— are we playing?” Brown hollered.

Ricks waved Brown to the right hash. Dollar defense. Seven defensive backs. All of them spread across the goal line. All of them protecting a 28-23 lead with five seconds left. All of them with a growing sense in their grit-tested guts that this is just how games for the Philadelphia Eagles go. That they can be up two scores in the third quarter, then in a sequence of mistakes and missed opportunities, the Dallas Cowboys are on their 27-yard line and Dak Prescott is hurling another heat-seeking missile toward CeeDee Lamb.

Lamb absorbed the catch at the Eagles’ 4. Four defensive backs closed. Brown delivered the final blow, bashing the ball loose as time expired. Reed Blankenship raised the fumbled football as the Eagles’ bench swarmed Lincoln Financial Field following the 28-23 victory. It was the only turnover in a game defined by the timing of stops by a fickle Philadelphia defense. It was the heart-stopping finish of yet another game that didn’t need to antagonize the anxious. But the Eagles (8-1) secured a 2 1/2-game lead in the NFC East over the Cowboys (5-3) in a fashion that’s becoming far too familiar.

“It’s stressful, man,” said wide receiver A.J. Brown, allowing himself a sigh and a smile. “Yeah, it’s got my nerves all bad.”

Stressful, indeed.

Cowboys not deterred after loss to Eagles

The postgame locker room felt different than a typical loss. Players were obviously disappointed. But despite falling to the rival Philadelphia Eagles, 28-23, Sunday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys believe they showed that they are heading in the right direction.

“We know we played good enough to win that game,” Cowboys DE/LB Micah Parsons said. “But we didn’t. That’s just how the dice rolls sometimes. Sometimes you play good enough and good enough isn’t good enough. That’s just the reality of the game.

“I feel like we have even more confidence now. I feel like everybody had us out and everyone was praising this Eagles team. Obviously, we gave them their best fit. I’m not even going to spit fuel on the fire. We’ll see them again in four weeks.”

This was always going to be a test compared to what happened Oct. 8 at San Francisco. That was supposed to be a matchup of two of the NFC’s best. But it ended in the 49ers delivering a 42-10 beatdown. The Cowboys didn’t look like they belonged on the same field.

They did Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

71.3 PPR points for CeeDee Lamb over the past two games

The Cowboys lost this game, but CeeDee Lamb’s fantasy managers can take solace because he posted 30.3 PPR points in this contest. That gives Lamb 71.3 PPR points over the past two games,

It’s the second time this year a wide receiver has posted 30+ PPR points in two consecutive games, joining Keenan Allen, who did so in Weeks 2-3. The last wideout to score 30+ PPR points in three straight games is Justin Jefferson, who did that in Weeks 14-16 last season.

Eagles hang on

On a final drive that featured as many penalties on the two teams as official plays (five and five), the Eagles tackle CeeDee Lamb short of the goal line on third-and-26 to end the game.

Eagles hang on for the 28-23 win and improve to an NFL-best 8-1 this season.

In what felt like the longest three-and-out ever, the Cowboys get the stop they needed.

Dallas will take over on their own 14-yard line with 0:46 left. Dak Prescott has 20 career game-winning drives in the regular season including one in Week 6 against the Chargers.

More coverage woes for Eagles cornerback James Bradberry

James Bradberry was in coverage on the Jalen Tolbert touchdown reception that made the score 28-23 in favor of the Eagles.

That is par for the course for Bradberry, as per Stathead, Bradberry had allowed five touchdown receptions in Weeks 5-8 and six for the entire season, so this reception makes it six touchdowns allowed in the past five weeks and seven for the 2023 campaign for Bradberry.

Jalen Tolbert inches Cowboys closer

After having a Tony Pollard rushing touchdown nullified by an illegal formation penalty, the Cowboys came back on the next play and scored on 7-yard touchdown pass from Dak Prescott to Jalen Tolbert. The score was Tolbert’s first of his career.

The two-point conversion failed upon review. Five-point game with 6:23 to play.

Third straight 23+ point fantasy game for Jalen Hurts

The Jalen Hurts touchdown pass to A.J. Brown gives Hurts 25.16 points for this game. That marks the third straight game that Hurts has posted 23+ points, which makes him the only quarterback to do that this and makes him the first quarterback to do this since Hurts racked up five straight games with 23+ points in Weeks 11-15 last season.
