I just realized something today: Bruce Springsteen's album, Born to Run, is his elevator pitch.It has eight songs that play in 39 minutes and 22 seconds.Today, Aug 25, 2023, is the 45th anniversary of the release of that masterpiece.I've heard lots of variations - works in progress - on all the songs. Bruce left in the good bits and took out what wasn't Born to Run.Every single person who heard the album understood who the man was, what he stood for, and came to Bruce's party.BTR is the one that made everybody sit up and say, "Bruuuuuuuuuuce." Born to Run had to be brilliant.Bruce had released two previous albums for Columbia Records (imperfect classics) that hadn't done much of anything for the company's bottom line. If Born to Run didn't break through, that was that. No more recording contract. No medium for his message. He worked on that album as if his life depended on it. And it did.Bruce was - and still is - a man with a message. He wants everyone to know ONE thing: Rock and roll music will save your life.Why? Because it's how he saved himself. Bruce Springsteen wasn't born "Bruce Springsteen." He created that guy from a dream and thin air. He wrote songs about driving all night when he didn't even know how to drive (true story). He refers to what he does as a "magic trick."It's real, but a little hard to explain in words.
